Many anglers who fished Portnacraig Pitlochry Beat in the
1970s through to the early 1990s period have very fond memories of Joe Russo, Forfar’s highly sociable and entertaining Scots Italian ice
cream man, who was a regular. Joe fished all methods with
great success and many will remember the plugs he made from sections of broom handle. He was also skilled fly fisherman and indeed a fly casting champion. But after finally losing a very hard fought battle with leukaemia, Joe very sadly died
in 1994 as a relatively young man. Every five years his family run a charity Tour
de Tayside bike run (this year on 11 August) to raise money for leukaemia research
and the blood cancer ward in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and to keep his memory alive – more information on https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/local/angus-mearns/938734/kim-pics-fri-evening-forfar-family-saddling-up-for-fifth-tour-de-tayside-in-memory-of-popular-ice-cream-man-joe/
