LATE-RUNNING SALMON

Jim Kennedy reports that Innes Smith returned another lovely late-running 10lb fish from the Lower Tummel beat on Monday afternoon. Donnie Whiteford also returned another beauty of about 6lbs on the same beat (see image). These are mature grilse that have come in from the sea only recently.  They could be too late for spawning if they have a bit of ripening still to do, although some silvery rawners and baggots can be fully ripe and shed milt or ova. It is not unusual to see salmon spawning in the main Tummel in late January and even early February, long after spawning has ceased in the headwater areas, so some of the late fish may still take part.
