Fine conditions on the R Tummel - January 22, 2011

Tales of springers being caught a few miles downstream on the Tay, lovely clear water and a bright and pleasant day encouraged a few rods to fish. A number of fish showed below the suspension bridge at Portnacraig but were any of them fresh run springers?

Some of them may indeed be springers but that can't be confirmed by catches just yet. Innes Smith made a good attempt at it though when he caught this beautiful very late running male fish of around 10lbs a long way down the flats.

Surprisingly the fish took a relatively small (#4?) Ally's Shrimp tied by his friend Alastair Howman fished on a floating line with just a short sink tip attached. Well done Innes, the elusive first fish has still to be counted but it looks like it may happen sooner rather than later. There is sure to be a bit more fishing effort next week and they say that the weather forecast is good. Fingers crossed for tight lines!
