Salmon News

Last week we were, again, blighted by very low water. Despite this the run of fish strengthened with some big fish reportedly being seen. Graeme Stewart caught a sealiced fish of around 11lbs on Sawmill on Tuesday and then lost a much bigger fish after a 15mins tussle. On Wednesday Jason Hendry took another sealicer, this time an 8lbs fish off Pitlochry bank and on Thursday Bean McGowan took a 6lbs fish off Portnacraig. It’s going to be tough until we have some decent rain but plenty of fresh fish are running with some really good ones amongst them so if you are in the right place at the right time ...all is not lost.

On Monday, at the start of yet another week of no water, rods faced difficult conditions but, again, a fairly strong run of fish is going through. Donnie Whiteford, back on the river after a week or so away, took a nice clean fish of 12lbs off Pitlochry bank on a monkey fly. Reports also came in of a good salmon lost on Sawmill to a trout fisherman fishing dry fly and, club member, Ewan McAdam lost a nice salmon when he was trout fishing with a gold-head nymph....perhaps we are sticking too much to tradition and alternative tactics should be tried a bit more often!

On Tuesday Dr Heiko Andresen used all his skill, from Norwegian rivers, to winkle out a cock fish of a bit over 12lbs off Pitlochry bank. Heiko caught his fish on a size 7 Svarte Satan(a Black Devil) which is apparently a favourite Norwegian pattern.

On Wednesday, Jimmy Ross kept things ticking along with a 6lbs fish off Pitlochry on a size 10 Stoat’s tail.

On Thursday Alan Oliver took a 7lbs fish off Pitlochry and on Friday John Davidson had one at 14lbs. Graeme Stewart continued his good season with a 3lbs sea trout off Sawmill.

We have now come to the end of our “fly only” period and spinning is now allowed throughout the beat. Anglers are asked however, during this prolonged period of low water, to be particularily considerate of other anglers on the opposite bank as the fishable water is much reduced in the low water conditions so competition for the best spots will be inevitable.

PAC also have Lower Tummel back now until 28th August. With a decent run of fish coming through, despite the low water, this beat should be well worth a cast in conditions that should suit it.
